The program provides participants with a broad understanding of the drug development process and enables future leadership opportunities throughout the organization.

The Vertex Physician Investigator Program offers exceptional early career physicians, with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, full-time employment commencing with a unique two-year, immersive experience in which they complete four customized rotations. The VPI program accelerates transition to industry through broad exposure to the drug development process and future leadership opportunities. VPIs have the opportunity to be mentored by Vertex and industry leadership.

We are committed to serving diverse communities of patients with serious diseases. Physician-investigators are critical to the successful development of new medicines. Our goal is to develop multiple career path options at Vertex for next-generation, new-to-industry physician investigators and to help further ensure the future success of Vertex Research and Development efforts.

What you bring:

  • Early career MDs, MD/PhDs, or MDs with another advanced degree AND with a proven research track record with expressed interest in biopharmaceutical research

  • Less than 5 years since completion of clinical training

  • Evidence of scholarly distinction, investigative work

  • Early career faculty looking to move to industry

Vertex Physician Investigators:

  • November 12, 2024: Recruitment process begins

  • November 12, 2024 – January 10, 2025 at 5 p.m. ET: Interviews conducted

  • September 2025: Two-year assignment begins
