Culture and values

Our unique culture, which celebrates innovation and fosters a sense of belonging for our talented team, along with our core values have been foundational to Vertex’s ability to create and deliver transformative medicines for people with serious diseases. We are the most innovative, make the best decisions for patients and attract the highest caliber of talent because our workforce represents the best and brightest talent — all working toward a shared mission. Sustaining our unique culture is a collective effort, and every single Vertexian is a steward of our culture and values.
The values that drive us
It’s not just about what we do, but how we do it. Our values are our bedrock and enable us to achieve our mission of creating transformative medicines for serious diseases.

Uncompromising Commitment to Patients
Patients are at the center of all that we do. Every decision we make is driven by the patients we serve.

Innovation is Our Lifeblood
We challenge the status quo. We ask what’s possible and find new paths to solve difficult and important problems.

Fearless Pursuit of Excellence
We chase excellence — we take calculated risks, learn from both setbacks and success and continuously improve — all at the highest level of personal integrity and ethics.

"We" Wins
We create outstanding diverse and inclusive teams, because we want the best and brightest minds from all backgrounds around the table solving tough problems. We debate hard, listen hard and challenge each other with respect.
Strengthening community
Our global Employee Resource Networks (ERNs) strengthen community and belonging across functions, levels and geographies. These employee-led groups recognize, celebrate and amplify the voices, insights and experiences of all colleagues.
Our ERNs are voluntary, employee-initiated and employee-led networks. Our five ERNs are open to all Vertex employees globally, and everyone is welcome to join as a member of any network. By thoughtfully curating programs across the globe that are grounded in culture and community, ERNs create unique opportunities for connection and strengthen belonging within Vertex.

Culture and Values Week
We provide an opportunity each year for Vertexians to connect and explore the important role our culture and values play in our business, relationships and communities. We know that we must invest in our culture and activate it every day throughout the year. This annual program provides a forum for Vertexians to intentionally pause to learn something new, connect with colleagues on the impact of our culture and values, and commit to the important role we each play in nurturing an inclusive culture in which all Vertexians can thrive.

Building outstanding teams
We want the best and brightest on our team
Hiring highly talented people fuels our ability to bring transformative medicines to people with serious diseases. We place tremendous value on building a strong talent pipeline and investing in early talent development to support Vertex and the biotech industry as a whole. We hire and promote the best-qualified candidates for our roles and seek to find this talent from a wide range of sources including online platforms, professional societies, networking and recruiting events, career fairs, colleges and universities, and temporary staffing organizations.
We offer many unique programs to help individuals early in their careers develop new skills, explore career possibilities, and make mentoring connections.

Our career growth programs are critical to nurturing a broad pipeline of early and emerging talent. We have robust summer internship, co-op and industrial placement programs and have established several flagship programs such as: Vertex Fellows, Physician Investigators, PharmD Fellows and MBA Summer Associates. We attract and build future leaders including students with varying levels of educational backgrounds, experiences and degrees to those without degrees.
We know we can’t do this work alone; we partner with organizations that allow us to build skills and gain experience across the entire educational and career journeys of students and early career talent in our communities.
Our partner organizations
We partner with organizations to design and provide early career programs that spark curiosity and empower growth among all students in the community, including those who have been historically underrepresented in biotech. For example, we collaborate with the Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) and Year Up to help young adults gain the skills and experiences required to succeed in biotechnology.
